Can a website use my device’s microphone?

Yes. A supported browser on HTTPS can request microphone permission, record a response and replay it locally. Nepious’s public edition stores saved recordings in the browser, without uploading them.

A practical review routine

  1. Read a prompt and identify what it asks you to explain.
  2. Record one response in your own words.
  3. Listen once for meaning: did you answer the question and develop an example?
  4. Listen again for delivery: which pauses, unclear words or repetitions interrupt understanding?
  5. Choose one improvement and answer a different prompt.

On-device transcription

Some browsers expose local speech recognition and a downloadable English language pack. Nepious explicitly requests local processing. If that feature is unavailable, you can still record and add a manual transcript. A website cannot assume that every Apple or Google dictation feature is exposed to every browser.

What a transcript cannot tell you

Written words omit pronunciation, stress, rhythm and the timing of pauses. Recognition errors may reflect the microphone or recognizer rather than your English. Judge intelligibility from the actual audio, ideally with a teacher’s help.
