What Does an English Practice Score Mean?
Learn why percent correct, self-review and a local practice band cannot guarantee a Duolingo English Test result.
Can a practice score predict my DET result?
Nepious has no validated conversion to an official score. The local band is a learning aid. A value of 70 here does not establish that you would receive 70 on the real exam.
Three kinds of feedback
- Objective accuracy: comparison with authored keys. Dictation and evidence selection include local partial-credit approximations.
- Rubric index: broad 1–5 judgments of a saved response, entered by the learner or a teacher.
- Illustrative band: a transparent teaching formula on a familiar 10–160 scale, displayed only after evidence is available for all four skills.
The disclosed teaching formula
Reading and listening orientation uses 10 + 150 × recent mean practice index. Open-response orientation uses 30 + 30 × (mean checklist rating − 1). Recent graded timed attempts are combined by skill, then across four skills. The app displays a fixed ±25 caution margin. This is not an empirically measured confidence interval.
Why uncertainty remains large
The questions have no official difficulty calibration. Tutor practice, repeated items, self-rating errors, microphone conditions and recognition errors can affect what you see. Transcript length and vocabulary counts do not by themselves establish accuracy, relevance, fluency or pronunciation.
A more useful readiness check
Try unseen material under timed conditions. Review writing and actual speaking recordings with a qualified teacher when possible. Take the official free practice test and keep its range as a separate external reference. Do not make an admissions or test-booking decision solely from a local band.
See the official scoring guide for officially annotated responses.
